GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections and Hair Loss: What We're Seeing in the Salon and What the Latest Research Says

Over the past year, one question has come up in our salon more than almost any other.
"Could my weight loss injections be causing my hair loss?"
We don't hear it once every few months anymore. We hear it regularly. As a holistic hair studio, we've learnt that when enough people start asking the same question, it's worth paying attention - not jumping to conclusions, but looking at what the science says and comparing it with what we're seeing every day in the salon. That's where some of the most interesting conversations begin. Not in a laboratory. But in the salon chair - compassionately and with care.
What We're Seeing in the Salon
Clients from all walks of life have shared that they've recently started GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic®, Wegovy® or Mounjaro®. Every person's health journey is unique, and the reasons for taking these medications are deeply personal. What caught our attention wasn't why they were taking them. It was the question that kept following.
"I've noticed my hair is shedding more… do you think the two could be connected?"
When enough people ask the same question, you naturally become curious.
As hair professionals, we spend every day observing hair. We notice changes that many people don't see until months later, simply because we work so closely with it.
While these are our observations, not scientific conclusions, there are several patterns we've been noticing more frequently.
Some clients tell us their ponytail feels noticeably thinner. Others say they're seeing more hair on the bathroom floor or in the shower than they've ever experienced before. We've also observed hair that appears to have less overall density, particularly around the temples and part line. Some clients describe their hair as feeling softer, finer or lacking the strength it once had.
Another interesting observation we've discussed within our team is that, for some clients, colour doesn't seem to hold quite as well as it previously did.
To be completely transparent, there is currently no published research demonstrating that GLP-1 medications directly affect hair colour longevity or colour retention.
This is simply something we've noticed in some clients experiencing significant hair changes. Whether this relates to alterations in the hair fibre itself, changes in new hair growth, nutritional status or another factor entirely isn't yet known.
It's an observation - not an established scientific fact. And that's an important distinction.
At Pura, we're passionate about evidence-based education. Sometimes what we notice in practice eventually becomes the focus of scientific research. Other times it doesn't.
Our job is to remain curious, honest and open-minded.

Hair Is Often One of the First Places the Body Tells a Story
One of the biggest misconceptions about hair is that it's separate from the rest of the body. In reality, it's one of the most metabolically active tissues we have.
Hair follicles are constantly producing new cells.
They require:
Energy.
Protein.
Iron.
Vitamins.
Minerals.
Healthy blood flow.
Balanced hormones.
A well-functioning immune system.
When everything is working together, the follicle can continue producing healthy hair.
But when the body experiences a significant change - whether that's illness, surgery, childbirth, emotional stress or rapid weight loss, it naturally begins prioritising survival over growth.
Hair isn't essential for keeping us alive. Our brain, heart and other vital organs are. So the body intelligently redirects its resources where they're needed most. Hair growth simply becomes less of a priority for a while. This isn't your body failing. It's your body adapting.
The Tiny Cells Quietly Running the Show
Deep within every healthy hair follicle is a small group of remarkable cells called dermal papilla cells. You don't need to remember the name. Just think of them as the follicle's communication centre.
These tiny cells sit at the base of each hair follicle and constantly send messages that help regulate how your hair grows. They influence when a hair begins growing. How long it continues growing. How thick that strand becomes. When it's eventually time for the follicle to rest before beginning the cycle all over again. They're like the conductor of an orchestra: They don't create the music themselves, but they coordinate everything else.
Scientists have become increasingly interested in dermal papilla cells because they appear to play a central role in maintaining healthy hair growth. When the body experiences significant physiological stress, rapid metabolic change or reduced nutrient availability, the signals coming from these cells may become less supportive of active hair growth. The result can be slower-growing hair, finer new hairs or more follicles transitioning into their natural resting phase. That doesn't necessarily mean the follicle has been permanently damaged. In many cases, it's simply responding to the body's changing environment.
So... What Does the Latest Research Actually Say?
This is where the conversation has become particularly interesting. Only a couple of years ago, the general thinking was fairly straightforward. Researchers believed that if people experienced hair loss while taking GLP-1 medications, it was almost entirely explained by the rapid weight loss that often accompanies treatment. Today, the picture is a little more nuanced.
Several large observational studies and systematic reviews published over the past two years suggest there does appear to be a small but measurable association between GLP-1 receptor agonists (particularly semaglutide and tirzepatide) and temporary, non-scarring hair loss. That doesn't necessarily mean the medications themselves are directly damaging hair follicles. In fact, researchers believe the answer is likely much more complex.
Hair shedding appears to be influenced by a combination of factors, including the speed of weight loss, reduced calorie intake, lower protein consumption, changes in nutrient availability, metabolic shifts and the body's natural physiological response to significant change. In other words, it's probably not one single cause. It's more likely several factors working together.
The reassuring news is that the type of hair loss most commonly reported is non-scarring, meaning the hair follicle itself remains intact, and new growth is usually possible once the underlying trigger settles. That doesn't make the experience any less distressing. Hair is deeply personal. For many people, it forms part of their identity, confidence and sense of self. This is exactly why we think these conversations deserve both compassion and good science.
Understanding Telogen Effluvium (Without the Medical Jargon)
The type of hair loss most commonly linked with significant weight loss, including weight loss associated with GLP-1 medications, is called telogen effluvium. It sounds like a complicated medical term, but the concept is actually quite simple.
Imagine your hair follicles are all following their own timetable. At any given time, around 85–90% of your hairs are actively growing, while the remaining hairs are resting before naturally shedding and being replaced with new growth. Normally, this cycle happens so gradually that you barely notice it.

When the body experiences a major physical change - whether that’s childbirth, surgery, severe illness, emotional stress or rapid weight loss - it can temporarily alter that timetable. Instead of a small number of hairs moving into the resting phase, many follicles may enter it at around the same time. Approximately two to four months later, those hairs begin to shed. This delay often catches people off guard. Many clients tell us, “But I started the injections months ago. Why is my hair only falling out now?” The answer is that the hair follicle may be responding to what happened several months earlier. This delayed response is one of the reasons telogen effluvium can feel so confusing.
The encouraging news is that telogen effluvium is considered a non-scarring form of hair loss, meaning the follicle itself usually remains intact. Once the underlying trigger settles and the body begins to find balance again, most people gradually start to see new growth over the following months.
Can Hair Loss Be Prevented While Taking GLP-1 Medications?
This is probably the question we’re asked most, and the honest answer is that we don’t yet know whether it can always be prevented. However, there are ways to support healthy hair while the body is adapting, and the key is early support.
Maintaining good nutrition may be one of the most important considerations. Because GLP-1 medications can significantly reduce appetite, some people unintentionally consume far less protein than their body needs. Hair is primarily made from keratin, which is a structural protein, so adequate protein intake becomes especially important during periods of weight loss. It may also be worthwhile discussing blood tests with your GP if you’re experiencing significant shedding, particularly if there are concerns about iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc or other nutritional deficiencies. These nutrients are not only important for healthy hair; they are essential for overall health and wellbeing.
It is equally important not to assume that every episode of hair loss is connected to a GLP-1 medication. Hair shedding can have many possible causes, including thyroid conditions, hormonal changes, low iron stores, illness, other medications and ongoing physical or emotional stress. This is why we encourage looking at the whole picture rather than searching for one simple explanation.
While it can be tempting to stop taking a medication when you notice increased shedding, that decision should always be made in consultation with the healthcare professional who prescribed it, rather than out of fear after reading something online.
Enter Mane Event®: Supporting the Follicle from the Inside Out
Coming back to our DP cells as explained earlier in the BLOG, the next question is:
Can these important cells be supported?

This is where Mane Event®, a nutritional hair supplement developed by Apotecari, which we love and stock in salon, becomes relevant. While many hair supplements focus mainly on the strength, shine or appearance of the hair fibre, the laboratory research behind Mane Event looked deeper, examining its effect on human Dermal Papilla cells.
In an in vitro study, the Mane Event formulation increased both Dermal Papilla cell viability (how well the cells remained healthy and active) and cell proliferation (their ability to multiply). Under the laboratory conditions tested, the exciting thing is that the results for Mane Event® came up slightly higher than those recorded for a well-known and widely used pharmaceutical drug in the same test.
It is important to keep these findings in perspective. It does not prove that Mane Event can prevent, treat or reverse GLP-1-related hair loss, and it cannot guarantee the same outcome for every person. What the research does offer is an encouraging insight into the importance of supporting the follicle itself.
Hair growth is influenced by many interconnected factors, including nutrition, hormones, genetics, stress, scalp health and overall wellbeing. There is rarely one product or treatment that provides the complete answer. For someone experiencing increased shedding during rapid weight loss or another major change within the body, Mane Event may be considered one part of a broader hair-support plan, alongside adequate nutrition, personalised scalp care and daily behaviour factors. After all, if healthy hair begins with healthy Dermal Papilla cells, supporting those cells is an important factor in hair growth.

This may include supporting a healthy scalp environment, encouraging adequate protein and nutrient intake, using gentle, strengthening haircare, protecting fragile new growth, reducing unnecessary stress on vulnerable hair, and referring you to your GP or another healthcare practitioner when further investigation may be needed.
Healthy hair has never been about one miracle product. It is about supporting the whole person.
Final Thoughts
One of the greatest privileges of working in a salon is that we don’t just see hair; we see people. We witness life’s transitions, including new babies, menopause, recovery after illness, periods of stress and fresh starts. Increasingly, we are also hearing conversations about GLP-1 medications and hair shedding.
